This new offering allows AI agents to securely access and operate traditional desktop applications in a managed cloud environment, addressing a major challenge in enterprise automation.
Many organizations still rely on legacy desktop applications such as ERP systems, CRMs, mainframe terminals, and custom-built tools. These applications often contain years of business logic, compliance requirements, and customizations that make them difficult and expensive to modernize.
With WorkSpaces for AI Agents, companies can now deploy autonomous agents that interact with these applications exactly as humans do — by viewing the screen and performing actions — without requiring API development or application rewrites.
Secure and Governed Agent Operations
The service builds on AWS’s decade-long experience with Amazon WorkSpaces, extending the same security, identity, and compliance controls used for human desktops to AI agents. Agents inherit network isolation, identity management, and governance policies, allowing organizations to maintain strict control while enabling automation.
Supported use cases include claims processing, patient data updates, trade settlements, invoice handling, and various back-office operations. The solution is compatible with any agent framework that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Key New Capabilities
Following positive feedback from the preview phase, AWS introduced several enhancements:
- MCP Tool Forwarding: Agents can interact directly with applications and the operating system through MCP calls, resulting in higher accuracy, lower latency, and reduced costs compared to traditional computer-use tools.
- Real-time Session Control: Human operators can monitor agent activity live and revoke access instantly if needed.
- Domain-Joined Fleets: Agents can operate under existing Active Directory identities, ensuring consistent access policies and audit trails.
Pricing is based on active session time, making it flexible for both short and long-running automation tasks.
