IBM Expands Enterprise Data Center Portfolio with Compact z17 and LinuxONE Rack-Mount Systems

AI Compute NewsIBM has expanded its enterprise infrastructure portfolio by introducing new single-frame and rack-mounted versions of its IBM z17 and LinuxONE 5 systems, giving organizations greater flexibility in deploying mission-critical workloads while addressing data center space and cost constraints. The announcement marks the first time IBM has offered rack-mounted configurations across its complete IBM Z and LinuxONE product families, broadening deployment options for enterprises operating hybrid IT environments.

Designed for Modern Data Centers

The newly introduced systems are aimed at organizations seeking the reliability and security of IBM's flagship mainframe technology in a more compact footprint. By offering both single-frame and rack-mounted configurations, IBM enables customers to integrate these systems into existing industry-standard 19-inch data center racks alongside storage, networking equipment, and other enterprise infrastructure.

The move reflects growing demand from enterprises looking to optimize space utilization while maintaining high-performance computing capabilities for business-critical applications. The new designs are intended to simplify deployment without compromising the performance, resiliency, and security standards associated with IBM's flagship enterprise platforms. 

Higher Capacity in a Smaller Footprint

IBM stated that the new systems support up to 82 processor cores and as much as 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers. Compared with previous comparable configurations, the systems provide roughly a 20% increase in processor core count and approximately 12% more memory capacity, allowing enterprises to consolidate workloads while supporting AI, transaction processing, and large-scale Linux applications. 

The company positions the new offerings as suitable for financial institutions, government agencies, healthcare providers, telecommunications operators, and other organizations that require continuous availability, high security, and large-scale transaction processing.

Supporting Hybrid Cloud and AI Workloads

IBM said the expanded portfolio is designed to help enterprises modernize legacy infrastructure while supporting hybrid cloud strategies and AI-enabled business applications. The compact systems can be deployed closer to distributed infrastructure, reducing complexity and improving operational efficiency for organizations running mixed IT environments.

Alongside the hardware announcement, IBM also introduced new infrastructure management capabilities intended to simplify administration across IBM Z and LinuxONE environments, helping IT teams monitor, automate, and optimize system operations. 

Market Availability

According to IBM, the new IBM z17 single-frame and rack-mount configurations, along with LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 and LinuxONE 5 Express systems, are scheduled to become generally available beginning August 12, 2026. Additional infrastructure management software is expected to follow later in August. 

With these additions, IBM is expanding its enterprise hardware portfolio beyond traditional large-scale mainframe installations, enabling customers to deploy mission-critical computing platforms in a wider variety of data center environments while supporting evolving hybrid cloud and AI infrastructure requirements.
